For many locals, Sacramento’s annual Free Museum Day—usually held the first Saturday in February at museums throughout the region—has become a time-honored tradition, marked in bold on their calendars. Braving chilly weather, unpredictable parking and long lines, families by the thousands would embark on a day of discovery, immersing themselves in the region’s rich history, fine arts and science museums, beloved play spaces and wild places, at no charge (or nearly so). Many venues would offer special programs for the kids, shuttles were available to hop from site to site, and big crowds only added to the day’s energy and excitement. ....

Crocker-Kingsley competition brings bright light for local artists, friends

Nevada County artists and friends Jill Mahanna and Ruth Chase have been accepted to the 80th Crocker-Kingsley Competition. The Kingsley Art Club, in cooperation with Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum and the Blue Line Gallery, holds a biennial competition for established artists as well as artists just emerging on the scene.
Both painters live in Nevada County. Jill is an oil painter of abstract and expressionist landscapes. Her painting, “Bridges,” was accepted into the show; it is part of her current series on paths and destination. Ruth will be exhibiting “She Finds Her Way,” a reflection on how childhood shapes womanhood, and the role vulnerability plays in our development. ....

The Crocker Art Museum delves into the topic of “Equity in Museums” with a series of discussions that begin on Thursday, Jan. 14. Three panelists will lead this first, hourlong event starting at 5 p.m. via Zoom. Advance reservations are required for both Crocker members (free) and nonmembers (also free!  which is pretty cool).

.- The Everson Museum of Art announced today that it has purchased seven new works by contemporary artists for its growing collection of 21st century art.
Spanning a variety of media, the new acquisitions reflect the Everson’s commitment to refining and diversifying its collection by adding works by artists of color, women artists, and other under-represented emerging and mid-career artists. The works are by artists who hail from across the country, but also include two artists who have lived and worked in Syracuse for decades: Ellen Blalock and Sharif Bey. Blalock previously exhibited her work at the Everson during 2012’s The Other New York and Bey will have a major solo exhibition at the Everson in 2022. “It’s truly an honor to have my work represented ....
