New grocery store focuses on ‘food justice’ in underserved Grand Rapids neighborhood

So, when the 30-year-old Grand Rapids resident had the opportunity to open her new neighborhood grocery store, South East Market, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she jumped on it.
She sees a connection between the slain civil right’s leader’s push for equal rights for Black Americans and her goal of chipping away at the chronic health issues that disproportionally plague low-income people of color.
“MLK really empowered people to make change where they are,” said Kelly, who has managed nutrition programs at various nonprofits and recently earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and sustainable business from University of Michigan. ....
