COVE â No campfires will be burning on Cove Elementary Schoolâs campus this summer yet it may have a summer camp-like atmosphere. The school will be the site of a new School Enrichment Program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, one in which students will discover that learning about math, science and art can be as enjoyable as roasting marshmallows. âIt will be more like a summer camp than a school,â Cove School School District Superintendent Earl Pettit said. Each day, students will participate in organized physical activities and engage in free reading or artistic activities of their choosing. Students will also complete a Science, Technology, Engineering, Artistic and Math program task aligned with the mission and goals of the school. ....
March 1, 1937 â May 10, 2021 âTwas 1937 that a mid-February blizzard blocked the 12 miles of road between Cove and La Grande, Oregon. Edward Harvey Campbell, who was serving as superintendent of the Cove School District, and his wife, Carmen Olive Celestine Touvenel Campbell, were expecting their first child. Mrs. Proctor, the Cove postmaster, organized a brigade of farmers and ranchers to open one lane of the road to get Mrs. Campbell to the Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande. They got there but, no baby appeared. Not liking that cold bumpy ride in mid-February, I decided to wait until there was warmth and sunshine, which there was on March 1. COVE â Two men, both optimistic about the Cove School Districtâs future, are vying for an opportunity to help guide the school district the next four years. Chris Thew, an athletic trainer, is challenging incumbent Andy Lindsey, a civil engineer, in a race for Position 1 on the Cove School Board. This is the only contested school board race this year in the Cove School District. Lindsey, who works for Anderson Perry & Associates Inc., is completing his fifth year on the school board. He said he decided to seek reelection because he wants to help the school district keep moving in the right direction. ....
