Keith Law Drops His Top 20 Cubs Prospects List for 2021, Including a Big Swing in the Top Ten

20. Ethan Hearn, C
I hope you recognize the name, since it’s one of the best in minor league baseball. Yohendrick Pinango, who came in at number 35 on our Cubs prospect list, doesn’t even turn 19 until May, so outside of the memorable name, he might not be on a lot of your radars. But he was ranked one of the best prospects in the DSL after his debut in 2019, and presumably was getting after it during the shutdown in 2020.
Law’s take on Pinango, which pegs him as simply an advanced hitter for his age: “Signed for $400,000 in 2018, Pinango looks like an advanced left-handed hitter, with good pitch recognition and bat-to-ball skills for his age. The Venezuelan outfielder has a running back’s frame and looks like he’s going to get a lot stronger, potentially with plus power, even though he didn’t homer in 274 PA in his DSL debut (albeit with 20 doubles). He’s in center now but probably moves to a corner in time, so the power has to develop for him to be a soli ....

Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects Countdown: 6 to 10

Chicago Cubs Top 20 Prospects Countdown: 6 to 10

Today I’m counting down the bottom half of the Top 10 of my top prospects in the Cubs system. I really think here is where we start to get a lot of talent. It was clear to me that these five were not as strong as the five featured tomorrow, but in what order they should be was pretty tough. You honestly could rank these five players in any order here and I wouldn’t argue. It depends on what traits you’re looking for in a prospect.
A quick repeat of my daily disclaimer: This year’s prospect lists were really difficult to put together because there was no minor league baseball last year. There is always a lot of guesswork in these rankings, but this year I’m really having to rely on my gut instincts and what other people are saying more than usual. As always, all errors are my fault. ....

The 2021 BN Top Ten Cubs Prospects: The Run Up to Davis

One thing I’ll say ahead of time: what a big season it is for the 5-9 spots on this list. When we look back on the 2021 season and discuss whether it was successful developmentally, the performance of the five guys in those spots in particular will be a real factor.
Previously: the intro, 40-21 and 20-11. Enjoy, and thanks for reading. And don’t miss out on my live chat with Brennen Davis at 3:30pm CT over at the BN Instagram!
10. Cory Abbott, SP, 25, Iowa (Stats). Acquired: 2nd round, 2017.
Skill Set: Cubs love the edge he plays with, and he benefits from an attack-attack-attack mentality on the mound. I believe the slider is more plus than it gets credit for, a belief that is backed up by the results (as a reminder, hitters went 25-for-213 in his last 11 AA starts). Can pitch backwards off his two breaking balls, or pitch conventionally, as the command of his fastball is generally above-average. ....

The 2021 BN Cubs Top Prospects List: State of the System and Best Tools

As we enter the next era for the Chicago Cubs, the importance of the farm system reaches a place not seen in six years.  Jed Hoyer has now repeated himself, on multiple occasions, speaking to how the Cubs now have “one eye on the future.” Their actions indicate it might even be more like one and a half eyes. Hoyer, and Theo Epstein on his way out the door, both indicated their optimism about what the farm system will show when it is permitted to return to the field: the actualization of a substantially increased investment in player development.
Last year, in my introduction to the 2020 BN prospect rankings, I said the Cubs had a good first tier, nice depth in the third tier, and very little in-between. The season was, for me, about building a good second tier of prospects. Without a minor league season, I’m not sure we have the evidence necessary to make many ....

Where the New Cubs Prospects Rank, Betting on Development, Espinoza, Weirdness, and Other Cubs Bullets

Yeah, but SHOULD old acquaintances be forgotten? Maybe sometimes, right? I can think about a lot of 2020 that I’d like to forget.
•   More on the Cubs’ new foursome of prospects, and where they slot into the system for MLB Pipeline:
MLB Pipeline slots Preciado in at 10th in Cubs Top 30, followed by Caissie at 11, Mena at 16 and Santana at 17. More on each prospect beyond the link below. https://t.co/Ror4eMbJ28
•   I think on most lists, you’ll see these guys close in the rankings, and mostly behind the top two tiers of the Cubs system (which, for me, is a top tier of Miguel Amaya, Brennen Davis, Brailyn Marquez, and Ed Howard, and then a second tier of Ryan Jensen, Chase Strumpf, Kohl Franklin, and Cole Roederer (I consider Adbert Alzolay as already having graduated, since he’s like a third of an inning away or something)). ....
