There’s Going to be a Lot of Velocity from the High-A South Bend Cubs This Year
The South Bend Cubs also announced their preliminary 30-man roster on Friday morning, as new Cubs minor league manager Michael Ryan will lead the squad beginning at home on Tuesday night. The first thing that jumps out at me: there is a lot of 96+ MPH velocity here.
The velocity will be headlined in the rotation by 2019 first-round pick Ryan Jensen and darling of Cubs blogdom Max Bain. The bullpen will have it in spades with Burl Carraway and Brandon Hughes from the left side, Ben Leeper and Eury Ramos from the right side. And that won’t be it. ....

The Cubs have a rebuilding system with many of their most talented prospects concentrated at the lower levels. Those players need at-bats and innings after losing the entire 2020 Minor League season to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ten members of on MLB Pipeline s Cubs Top 30 have yet to make their pro debuts, most notably shortstops Cristian Hernandez (signed for $3 million out of the Dominican Republic in January), Ed Howard (a local Chicago product who was the club s first-round pick in the 2020 Draft) and Reginald Preciado (the best of the four prospects acquired from the Padres in the Yu Darvish trade last December). Eight more have yet to reach full-season ball, including 2019 first-round right-hander Ryan Jensen. Two more prominent prospects, right-hander Kohl Franklin and second baseman Chase Strumpf, have topped out with a week each in Low A. ....

• Although the Cubs did not necessarily set out to accumulate one of the most contact-oriented rotations in baseball, it may prove to be the case. Among the currently-projected members of the rotation, Adbert Alzolay was the only guy to post a better-than-league-average strikeout rate in 2020 (and he made just four starts). Otherwise, Zach Davies sported the best strikeout rate in projected rotation … and he was 3% below average. Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta, Trevor Williams, and Alec Mills were all welllll below average, and generally don’t project to see significant increases in their strikeout rates this year. This rotation figures to be EXTREMELY reliant on managing the quality of contact to be successful. ....
