Old St. Augustine laws: From harboring runaway slaves to animal rights


“People evolve and change, said City Commissioner John Valdes in an interview with The Record. Times change and an elected government reflects that change through the evolution of our laws. People will probably look back in 100 years at some of the ordinances we passed today with the same amazement that we look at those of 100 or 200 years ago.
“Our city attorney [Isabelle Lopez] is constantly reviewing ordinances to do what she calls dusting and cleaning and bring them to us to make them more appropriate for the time in which we live,” Valdes said.
The following is a selection of unedited city ordinances from pre-Civil War to the 1920s from the collection of St. Augustine Historical Society’s research library. ....

$17 million YMCA childcare centre opens atop Gastown parkade (PHOTOS)


Both facilities, connected by a pedestrian bridge over a laneway, occupy under half of the footprint of the top level of the parkade’s north and south wings.
They feature a combined total floor area of about 10,000 sq ft of indoor space and 11,000 sq ft of outdoor space, with panoramic views of the harbour and mountains.
The total capacity of both the north and south facilities is 74 young children, with each wing holding 37.

What: The world premiere of yellow objects, an exhibition written and directed by Sydney Risk Award-winning playwright Derek Chan, is happening at The Firehall Arts Centre. The exhibition invites attendees to question our responsibility to future generations by stepping into a Hong Kong of two different eras: 2019 and 2050.
The exhibition occurs in the Firehall Arts Centre’s courtyard with objects, voice recordings, and projections. There are no live performers in yellow objects, and there is a limit of ten patrons per showing.

What: Granville Island Brewing is hosting an immersive 10-day pop-up to celebrate the launch of its new Peach Sour.
