Sarah Flower 00:00 The third annual Southwest Colorado Women in Business 2021 Award Ceremony, hosted by Ballantine Communications, the Durango Herald and the Cortez Journal will be held in person this year. The event recognizes nine outstanding women across several different categories that work and live in both Montezuma and La Plata counties. The ceremony, which almost didn t happen this year, is usually held in March to honor Women s History Month. Cindy Fisher is the coordinator for the event. She says that the honorees are chosen based on community wide nominations, and then furthered by a selection committee. State Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins said 50% of residents 16 and older have received their first shot and 31% are fully vaccinated. The latest figures come as other states look to expand distribution beyond health care workers and other priority groups to meet an April 19 deadline from the Biden administration. While New Mexico opened up eligibility Monday, Collins said priority will still be given to those who are 75 and older and other senior citizens who have chronic conditions that put them at greater risk. ....

Mesa Verde National Park designated as dark sky park April 6, 2021
CORTEZ, Colo.- The Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, known for preserving ancient cultural sites, has been designated the 100th International Dark Sky Park, park officials said. In a statement Monday, the park said the certification would help foster astronomy-based recreation and tourism while improving energy efficiency and reducing operational costs in the park related to outdoor lighting, the Cortez Journal reported. “We are happy to announce our work to … provide visitors opportunities to experience the wonder of starry nights,” said park Superintendent Cliff Spencer. “National Parks are some of the best places in America to see a breathtaking array of stars, planets and neighbouring galaxies.” ....
