Community concerns are yet to be addressed in the planning for the Fitzgerald Road level crossing removal, according to Brimbank council.
The state government announced in January that work on removal of level crossings at Fitzgerald Road, Ardeer and Robinsons Road, Deer Park had been brought forward to this year.
At last week’s council meeting, councillors resolved to write to Transport Minister Jacinta Allan and the Level Crossing Removal Project team over a number of concerns they have about the Fitzgerald Road removal.
The council had previously written to both in September, raising concerns about loss of open space and biodiversity, traffic noise impacts, air pollution and active transport. The council said it did not receive replies to its letters until after the announcement that the project had been brought forward. ....

Residents of Hobsons Bay are invited to join us in celebrating World Wetlands Day 2021 at Truganina Explosives Reserve on Saturday 6 February, to shine light on the vital role our wetlands play for our people and biome.
Included in the free festivities at this COVIDSafe event are: a talk from Deakin Uni’s Blue Carbon Lab; guided walks around Hobsons Bay’s wetlands; a sausage sizzle; a guitar performance by Ted Smith; storytime with local author, Claire Saxby; and plenty of hands-on activities for children and people of all ages! Attendees can also participate in a raffle to win a fabulous and original piece of artwork from our very own local artist, Rob Mancini, or a breakfast for two at Birdcage Cafe, Altona. All funds raised will support the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre in its aim to connect people with nature. ....

One of Australia’s leading teachers of traditional drumming, Maidstone’s Ray Pereira has been honoured with an OAM for service to the performing arts as a percussionist, performer and composer.
Sri Lanka-born Pereira counts introducing different types of percussion to the Australian community, and popularising it, among his most significant contributions.
“Because we are living in a country like Australia, in those days there was limited exposure to other cultures, for example there was no Latin band or salsa band whereas now you’ve got all these communities that have built up,“ he said.
“I was always a firm believer that music is not just something that comes from an individual – it is actually part of a community.“ ....
