Signs of growth: West Temple building boom continues as businesses expand


It’s one of many new businesses the area is seeing.
The shop at 6520 W. Adams Ave. — across the street from a Starbucks and near the entrance to Holy Trinity High School — will be ready to open in a few weeks, workers at the site said. It is one of two Temple locations — the other at 201 N. General Bruce Drive near West Adams and Interstate 35 — the Oregon-based coffee chain will open within the next several months.
“We’re so excited for our two upcoming shops in Temple,” company spokesperson Rilynn Davis told the Telegram. Dutch Bros Coffee is a mostly drive-thru shop that serves coffee, smoothies, freezes, teas, energy drinks and nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee. Walk-up customers also are welcome. ....

Nature center management: Temple, Belton to complete 20-year lease agreement with Corps


Miller Springs Nature Center will remain open to the public and managed by the cities of Temple and Belton for the next 20 years once a new lease agreement with a federal agency is completed.
On Tuesday evening, the Belton City Council authorized City Manager Sam Listi to approve the lease agreement for the Miller Springs Nature Center — a joint operation between Temple, Belton and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“We are currently in the third year of a five-year lease, and all parties … believe it is in the public interest to extend the existing agreement to 2041 with very minor changes to the language,” a Belton city staff report said. ....

Killeen City Council prepares to discuss budget for 2022, new Communications Director appointment


After a pair of meetings were canceled Tuesday night, the Killeen City Council will convene next week to begin discussions on the annual budget for the fiscal year of 2022.
Meetings to introduce the budget and handle other topics were canceled Tuesday due to a lack of a quorum.
Councilmembers Nina Cobb, Debbie Nash-King, Jessica Gonzales and Ken Wilkerson were unable to attend, according to Killeen spokeswoman Hilary Shine. At least four voting council members are needed to have a legitimate quorum.
Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra, who became mayor in 2016, said this is the first time as mayor that a council meeting was canceled due to lack of a quorum. Segarra said three of the council members were going to chime in through Zoom, which doesn’t count towards a quorum. ....

2 public hearings on proposed $216 million Temple budget set


Two public hearings are scheduled on the city of Temple’s proposed $216 million budget for fiscal year 2022.
The Temple City Council will hold the first hearing on the budget and proposed tax rate at 5 p.m. July 15 during its regular meeting. The Council will hold a second public hearing at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 13 before voting to adopt the budget.
The two meetings will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 2 N. Main St.
The $216,451,423 proposed budget for the city of Temple for fiscal year 2022 calls for adding police and other positions to deal with continued growth. The proposed budget is subject to adjustments and approval from the City Council. ....
