Families seek shelter in caves
When heavy rain started to lash Aliyar near Pollachi on Friday evening, young couple Suresh and Sangeetha from Chinnarpathi tribal settlement prepared for a tough journey.
Along with other families, the couple carried their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Pournika and embarked on a trek through the jungle to an alternative dwelling which had been home to their ancestors for years – the caves. ....

A day after R. Mahendran quit as the vice-president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), four of its office-bearers on Friday accused him of being responsible for the party’s rout in the Assembly election, including the defeat of party president Kamal Haasan.
MNM’s State secretary of agriculture wing Mayilsamy, State secretary of women and children’s wing Mookambika Rathinam, State secretary- propaganda Anusha Ravi and State secretary- organisation for Coimbatore Zone A. Ranganathan spoke to mediapersons here on Friday.
Mr. Mayilsamy alleged that Mr. Mahendran did not appoint adequate party workers during the election campaign, particularly at Sulur and Palladam Assembly constituencies and further accused him of running the party like a “corporate company.” ....

CHENNAI: Vice-president of actor Kamal Hassan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam R Mahendran quit the party on Thursday, days after the party performed poorly in the Tamil Nadu assembly election. Mahendran said Kamal was misguided by a few individuals around him and the party was functioning in an “undemocratic manner.”
Former president APJ Adbul Kalam scientific advisor V Ponraj, who joined the party recently, has also quit the party. He joined the party on March 3.
Party general secretaries A G Mourya, Umadevi, C K Kumaravel and M Muruganandam and election strategist Suresh Iyer have also submitted their resignations. ....
