‘Mahendran responsible for MNM’s poor performance’

A day after R. Mahendran quit as the vice-president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), four of its office-bearers on Friday accused him of being responsible for the party’s rout in the Assembly election, including the defeat of party president Kamal Haasan.
MNM’s State secretary of agriculture wing Mayilsamy, State secretary of women and children’s wing Mookambika Rathinam, State secretary- propaganda Anusha Ravi and State secretary- organisation for Coimbatore Zone A. Ranganathan spoke to mediapersons here on Friday.
Mr. Mayilsamy alleged that Mr. Mahendran did not appoint adequate party workers during the election campaign, particularly at Sulur and Palladam Assembly constituencies and further accused him of running the party like a “corporate company.”

For the first time voters, the whole experience of visiting a polling station, choosing the candidate on the EVM and casting their vote was new and different.
S. Sriharan of Tatabad, Coimbatore, plans to keep his booth slip safe. “It is a reminder of my first voting exercise,” says the medical student.
Rashmi B., a second year college student, enquired with her mother and understood how to vote. After getting all the details the young voter exercised her franchise at the government school in Vadavalli, accompanied by her friend, S. Diksa.

Static surveillance teams and flying squads on Monday seized ₹ 2.03 lakh in Mettupalayam and ₹ 1.70 lakh in Pollachi. The teams also seized liquor worth ₹ 4.74 lakh from Kavundampalayam, Coimbatore South, Singanallur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi and Valparai constituencies.
Monday’s seizure took the total cash seized to ₹ 6.87 crore and liquor to ₹ 74.88 lakh.
Tiruppur
A flying squad team seized ₹ 1.09 crore cash during a vehicle check at Palladam on Monday. Police sources said that the team led by Palladam DSP K. Sriramachandran was engaged in a vehicle check near the Block Development Office at 3 p.m. when they found the cash in a four-wheeler.

AAA Cadre from the AIADMK and DMK staged separate demonstrations at Palladam in Tiruppur district on Thursday expressing their discontent at the candidate selections announced by the respective parties for the Palladam Assembly constituency.
Police sources said that after the AIADMK announced former Minister and party’s organisation secretary M.S.M. Anandan as the candidate for Palladam constituency, around 50 supporters of the incumbent MLA Karaipudur A. Natarajan staged a demonstration outside Palladam Bus Terminus. They raised slogans demanding that Mr. Natarajan must be given ticket to contest from Palladam once again.
