Mountain West Community, Tribal College Leaders Welcome Biden's Education Proposal

President Biden has laid out his vision for the future of public education, which includes a nationwide community college tuition waiver for all Americans who want to take advantage.
That waiver would be especially impactful in states with the lowest levels of higher education attainment, including several in the Mountain West. In Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and New Mexico, fewer than 30% of adults over 25 have a bachelor s degree.
Central Wyoming College s president, Brad Tyndall, said Wyoming s low percentage is partly due to its history of high-paying jobs in the energy sector.
In Wyoming we have the highest number of people who have made it to the middle class and above without a college education. Why? Oil and gas. You don t need a degree to work many jobs in those industries, Tyndall said. And now, the economy is shifting and we re in trouble. We need some major GI Bill kind of initiative to get adult learners through. ....

College Fund Honors Students of the Year, Coca Cola Scholars, and Honoree of the Year


President Cory Sangrey-Billy of Stone Child College has been named the American Indian College Fund’s Honoree of the Year.
The American Indian College Fund will honor 35 Tribal College and University Students of the Year, 36 Coca Cola First Generation Scholars, and its 2020-21 Tribal College and University Honoree of the Year at a virtual ceremony on April 5.
Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarships are awarded by the American Indian College Fund and the Coca-Cola Foundation to students who are the first in their families to attend a tribal college or university. The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded more than $5 million to the College Fund since 1990 to assist more than 400 first-generation Native Americans in their college education. The scholarship is renewable throughout students’ college careers if they maintain a 3.0 grade point average and are active in campus and community life. ....
