Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College Celebrates Commencement


Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College (LCOOC) celebrated its spring commencement ceremony, honoring 58 graduates, on Saturday, May 22, 2021. The class of 2021 is the first class to include bachelor’s degree graduates.
Congratulatory remarks were offered by Lorraine Gouge, vice chair of the Lac Courte Oreilles tribal governing board and Monica Chase, JD, LCOOC board of regents vice chair. Keynote speaker Sarah Howes, an Anishinaabe artist, designer, teacher, and community organizer from the Fond du Lac reservation in Minnesota, spoke of her experience as an Indigepreneur.
The student body was represented by two honors students; Lydia DeNasha, representing the bachelor’s in business graduates, and Tina Garner, representing the bachelor’s in human services graduates. College Fund Honors Students of the Year, Coca Cola Scholars, and Honoree of the Year


President Cory Sangrey-Billy of Stone Child College has been named the American Indian College Fund’s Honoree of the Year.
The American Indian College Fund will honor 35 Tribal College and University Students of the Year, 36 Coca Cola First Generation Scholars, and its 2020-21 Tribal College and University Honoree of the Year at a virtual ceremony on April 5.
Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarships are awarded by the American Indian College Fund and the Coca-Cola Foundation to students who are the first in their families to attend a tribal college or university. The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded more than $5 million to the College Fund since 1990 to assist more than 400 first-generation Native Americans in their college education. The scholarship is renewable throughout students’ college careers if they maintain a 3.0 grade point average and are active in campus and community life. ....
