The watch, the vaccine and the pharmacist | Alexandria Times

At around 9 a.m. on Jan. 15, Yodit Gulelat, the owner of Van Dorn Pharmacy, found herself facing down a growing line of elderly patients eager to get their COVID-19 vaccinations. The pharmacy had just received its first batch of Moderna vaccine doses from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the line outside her door was ballooning.
Gulelat, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ethiopia in 1986, worked non-stop to process the winding line of patients.
“I didn’t see her take a sip of water,” Pamela Norton, director of business development for a local architectural firm who had been at the pharmacy throughout the vaccination process, said. ....

For six months during the pandemic, music was alive again in Alexandria. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t.
At a time when concert halls, clubs and other live music venues had to close their doors, Classical Movements, an Old Town based classical music tour company, found a creative solution to the sudden dearth of live music. Starting in June, Classical Movements held a series of intimate, socially distanced outdoor concerts in the “secret garden” behind its historic 18th century building at 711 Princess St. ....

Community heartened as effort to preserve River Farm advances | Alexandria Times

Proposed state funding in both the Virginia House of Delegates and Virginia Senate budgets could bring the Save River Farm campaign closer to the purchase and preservation of the historic River Farm, a 27-acre property once owned by George Washington.
On Feb. 10, Alexandria State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D) and Mount Vernon Del. Paul Krizek (D) announced that proposed funding for the preservation project had advanced in both the House Appropriations Committee and Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee budgets.
The House Appropriations Committee requested $2 million in direct funding for the preservation of River Farm, while in the Senate budget, $5 million in combined land conservation funds would go toward the preservation of both Chickahominy tribal land and River Farm. At least $2 million of the $5 million will go toward River Farm, though discussions are ongoing and legislators have to determine whether to take the funding route proposed by either the House or Senate, Ebb ....

Taylor Run restoration project criticized by community | Alexandria Times

The planned restoration of a stretch of Taylor Run drew widespread community concern at a virtual project update on Jan. 28, as environmentalists and residents questioned how effective and harmful the project will be.
City staff’s plan is to implement a natural channel design in a 1,900-foot section of Taylor Run from a sewer outfall near Chinquapin Recreation Center to First Baptist Church on King Street. The city’s stated goal with the project is to stabilize the degraded channel and exposed, at-risk sewer infrastructure, preserve the local ecology and improve water quality by slowing the downstream flow of phosphorous, nitrogen and sediment caused by erosion. ....
