ISLAND CITY â A new contract with the Union County Sheriff s Office for law enforcement services in Island City is set to take effect July 1. The Union County Board of Commissioners Wednesday, April 7, ratified the pact that Island City s city council approved Feb. 15. The contract is similar to the one now in place. The contract calls for Island City to continue receiving 80 hours a month of law enforcement service from the Union County Sheriff s Office. The contract, like the present one, will automatically increase 1.5% each year on July 1 to allow for cost-of-living pay increases and will remain in place indefinitely unless one party pulls out or negotiates for a change. ....

I enjoyed your Feb. 23, 2021, article about the changes to the Union County Sheriff s Office under the direction of our new sheriff, Cody Bowen. Sheriff Cody Bowen took time late Friday afternoon, Feb. 19, for an interview with The Observer. Three days earlier the lanky Bowen kicked a hole through a wall in a nearby room, signaling the start of some demolition and renovation. The move was as much symbolic as literal. That wall divided the break areas for the patrol deputies and their supervisors, creating small spaces for both. Removing it and adding some other upgrades, he said, makes the space more useful and roomy. It also shows he wants the sheriff s office to function as a team. ....
UNION COUNTY â Boyd Rasmussen no longer can be a law enforcement officer in Oregon. And from the account he provided to the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, he no longer wants to. The former sheriff of Union County surrendered all of his police certifications in January to the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, according to public records. Rasmussen, who did not responded to requests for comments, signed a stipulation with the DPSST on Jan. 6 and stated his days in policing were over. âI am retiring from law enforcement,â he stated per the agreement, âand have been offered a position with (a) company which will not require a law enforcement certification.â ....
