Sheriff Cody Bowen took time late Friday afternoon, Feb. 19, for an interview with The Observer. Three days earlier the lanky Bowen kicked a hole through a wall in a nearby room, signaling the start of some demolition and renovation. The move was as much symbolic as literal. That wall divided the break areas for the patrol deputies and their supervisors, creating small spaces for both. Removing it and adding some other upgrades, he said, makes the space more useful and roomy. It also shows he wants the sheriff s office to function as a team. ....

And from the account he provided to the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, he no longer wants to. The former sheriff of Union County surrendered all of his police certifications in January to the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, according to public records. Rasmussen, who did not responded to requests for comments, signed a stipulation with the DPSST on Jan. 6 and stated his days in policing were over. âI am retiring from law enforcement,â he stated per the agreement, âand have been offered a position with (a) company which will not require a law enforcement certification.â ....
