Tumors find many ways to evade groundbreaking cancer drug

Researchers were ecstatic 2 years ago when, after decades of effort, they devised drugs that could block a tumor-promoting protein in cancer patients called KRAS, which previously seemed impervious to treatment. But many of these KRAS inhibitors the first of which was approved by U.S. regulators in May quickly lost their luster, like other targeted cancer drugs: Most patients’ tumors resumed growing after a few months, as their cancer cells became resistant to the inhibitors. Now, a study finds that the roots of this resistance are surprisingly complex, with tumors using an array of escape routes to evade the attack on KRAS. ....

Swimmers hopeful of new record in Ireland to Wales relay effort


A group of Northern Ireland men are hoping to have set a new world record for swimming from Ireland to Wales.
The Oa Giants swam 116kms (72 miles) from Co Wexford to the Pembrokeshire coast in 34 hours and 25 minutes.
Keith Garry, John McElroy, Colin Lindsay, Dominic Mudge, Chris Judge and Bill Donnelly took it in turns to brave St George’s Channel in a challenging day and night swim, setting off early on Saturday from Carne Pier.

They described spending months preparing for the challenge with winter swimming in the sea and lakes, as well as mountain climbing, running, strength training and nutritional regimes, to ensure they were at their peak last weekend. ....
