Roundtable Colorado Proud With the pandemic nearly in the rearview Colorado agriculture producers and retailers are taking a look back at how unprecedented times changed the way they do business. They’re also sharing what helped them succeed during a virtual roundtable hosted by the CDA’s Colorado Proud Program. Elizabeth Mozer, Founder, and CEO of Fort Collins-based LoCo Food Distribution tells producers who want to sell to wholesale buyers that flexibility is key as Colorado agriculture supply chains recover. Mozer: “ And really be able to listen to what they are asking you for. ..being open to that and being ready to change packaging, make sure that your labels are correct and accurate and follow all the rules. And make sure that your products are in a size that is appealing for wholesale producers.” ....
Colorado Proud April This month it’s fresh asparagus Totta: “This month because it’s Spring and these things are popping up everywhere, we decided to focus on asparagus and we have a really good recipe for grilled asparagus from Chef Jason. These tiny green asparagus are popping up all over Colorado and that’s how you know produce season is officially starting. What we love about asparagus is that it’s fat-free, sodium-free, high in folates, and a good source of vitamins A and C. “ Danielle Trotta, Colorado Proud Program Manager. When buying asparagus, choose odorless stalks with dry, tight tips, and avoid limp or wilted stalks. Fresh asparagus harvests last through mid-June. ....
State Vet Welcomed by Colleagues Thursday May 6th, 2021 New Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Maggie Baldwin begins her position with enthusiastic support from colleagues at the Department of Agriculture. Colorado Proud Program Manager Danielle Trotta says she is happy to welcome the new state vet for a host of reasons. Trotta: “ I’m just so excited. The Colorado Department of Agriculture has been making history for the past couple of years elevating women to these great positions. We started with Commissioner Kate as the first women commissioner and now we have our first Colorado State Veterinarian Maggie Baldwin. She just really stepped up to the plate during the pandemic and worked with the Governor’s office and emergency response and put her skill set to good use. She’s young, she has a family and we’re just happy to see her excel and plant her roots and do great things in that position.” ....
Funding For Colorado Proud A bill working its way through the state legislature could send as much as 2.5 million dollars to the Colorado Department of Agriculture for its Colorado Proud Program. The Funding Colorado Proud bill is expected to pass. The money should help agriculture businesses create new resources and enhance marketing support among other needs. Colorado Proud Marketing Specialist Danielle Trotta says this an opportunity for Colorado Ag businesses to give them feedback about how exactly they’d like to see the money used. Trotta: “We did send out a survey of all of our members and stakeholders because we really want to know what business owners, organizations, producers want us to do with the funds that would be most resourceful in this time moving forward from the pandemic. We’ve got some big ideas that we’re looking into with retailers and reaching out to consumers to get Colorado Proud front of mind in our state and the consumers that live ....
Colorado Proud Virtual Roundtable Colorado Proud will be holding a virtual roundtable on May 13 from noon to 1 pm. The focus of the roundtable will be connecting the agriculture industry and small food businesses with important dialog, key learnings, and productive ways to flourish. With small businesses especially top of mind during the pandemic pause, a mix of Colorado-based ag panelists will apply last year’s learnings – and discomforts – and discuss experiences, issues, and solutions. Danielle Trotta, Colorado Proud Program Manager will be moderating for the panel discussion, as well as Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg will be addressing strategies to support entrepreneurship, programs, grants, and emergency relief. ....
