Candlelight Village fire injures one

COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) was called to a residential fire in the 2600 block of Rosedale Drive, in Candlelight Village Mobile Home Park, just after 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Firefighters were quick to respond and were able to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes.
CFD says one person was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Columbus Regional Health.
Damages were significant and were estimated at about $80,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Looking ahead: ASAP looks to bolster community response to drug crisis in 2021
Alliance for Substance Abuse Progress leaders are planning to look at how they can bolster the community-wide response to substance use disorder over the next year amid a worsening drug overdose crisis that has claimed 101 lives in Bartholomew County since 2017, including at least 30 last year.
Much of the focus for 2021 involves addressing gaps in Bartholomew County’s ability to help people overcome substance use disorder and evaluating the capacity and need for local inpatient treatment options, ASAP officials said.
Among the gaps highlighted by ASAP officials were a potential inpatient medically supervised detox program in Bartholomew County, more recovery housing for women and the possibility of additional ASAP-run recovery homes, said ASAP Executive Director Doug Leonard. ....

Ralph W. Rutan, 79, of Columbus, died at 2:12 am, December 28, 2020, date, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Ralph was born December 27, 1941 in Bartholomew County, the son of Ralph G. and Ruth Marie (Swango) Rutan. He married Katherine (Purtlebaugh) on November 22, 1960, she passed on July 13, 2019.
Ralph worked for Marsh supermarket for 43 years before retiring. He loved to attend church and travel. To friends and family, he was lovingly known as the Bible Thumper and an avid guitar player. Ralph enjoyed keeping company with his faithful friend, his dog, Fred. Ralph will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. ....

Ron W. Dutcher, 53, of Columbus, passed away unexpectedly at 7:21 p.m. Friday, December 24, 2020 at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Ron was born December 29, 1966, in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the son of Willard J. and Marilyn Fodrea Dutcher. On May 19, 2011, he married Keri Robertson.
Mr. Dutcher enjoyed collecting. He enjoyed a large collection of knives, swords and at one time, an extensive collection of Superman memorabilia. Ron also enjoyed woodworking. He will be remembered as a great cook that loved to experiment with new dishes. Baking was one of Ron’s specialties; including but not limited to, cookies, cakes, cobblers, snicker doodles and baloney crud. He took joy in singing with his family and was an excellent singer. His sense of humor and comedic approach to life will be missed by those that knew him. ....

Local health care workers receive COVID-19 vaccine
Initially, Missy Robinson was against receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to the unknown.
After quite a bit of research and discussions, though, she became excited about it.
Robinson, who has been a registered nurse for 25 years and currently is assistant director of nursing at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour, said she happily took the vaccine for her patients, family, community and profession.
As a nurse, I have seen firsthand what this virus has done and so many lives lost, not only due to the virus itself but the associated isolation, she said. If I can be a part of something that saves a life, then I have done my part in battling this pandemic. ....
