Coronado City Council unanimously approves Fourth of July Fireworks show and other celebrations -

CORONADO (KUSI) – The Coronado City Council unanimously approved having a fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day later this summer.
Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey was happy to announce his city will be celebrating Independence Day with fireworks, a parade, 7.4K community run, and a demo from the U.S. Navy Parachute team, the Leap Frogs.
Bailey said, “the only way we’re going to return to normalcy, is to actually start planning for it, and making it happen.”
On the other hand, the San Diego Democrat Party is calling on the San Diego City Council and County Board of Supervisor to end SeaWorld’s Fireworks show. The Democrats claim the noise from SeaWorld’s fireworks, “frighten companion animals, terrifies lonely shelter dogs and cats, and wreaks havoc on wildlife, often causing dogs and cats to flee and become lost and injured, and the toxic chemicals released into the air and water poison the environment.” ....

Richard Bailey, Mike Donovan, Casey Tanaka, Take Oath Of Office To Serve Coronado

The three gentlemen sworn into office at the Dec. 12, 2020 City Council meeting were all veteran public servants. Between the three of them there are 22 years of experience as decision makers serving on Coronadoâs City Council.Â
Prior to the swearing-in ceremonies, outgoing councilmember Whitney Benzian was presented with a proclamation, key to the city, and other gifts of appreciation. He thanked his colleagues, City Manager Blair King, and his family, for their support during his four year term.
Richard Bailey, re-elected to a second four-year term as Mayor, said there was no greater honor than to represent the people who call Coronado home. He thanked his council colleagues for their collaboration on significant accomplishments during the past four years, and recognized his mom for her unwavering support. ....

Discover Coronado Coming To The Aid Of Local Restaurants

In a unanimous decision on Dec. 3, the Advisory Board of Discover Coronado approved a new community initiative that addressees the urgent need for customers at local restaurants. As Covid-19 compliance guidelines continue to change, Coronado restaurants are in survival mode. With little or no revenue, restaurants are saddled with significant loan debt and rental obligations. Some have closed their doors until conditions drastically improve.
Discover Coronado will commission a new marketing campaign that promotes date night dining in Coronado and each restaurant in the community should benefit from the effort. The Advisory Board approved the restaurant campaign to improve the vibrance and desirability of Coronado. It is hoped widespread restaurant closures can be avoided. ....

Ocean Boulevard Street Improvement Project Passes In 3-2 City Council Vote

The Dec. 1 Coronado City Council meeting began with a ceremonial recognition of the Cityâs 130th anniversary of incorporation on December 11, 1890. The milestone anniversary was commemorated with a five minute historic video and a city-wide exercise challenge that encouraged people to get outside and exercise during the pandemic. After the video presentation, Jamie Monroe of Easy Day Sports reported that 2,677 people had signed up for the 130 Virtual Challenge. The goal for individuals is to complete 130 miles running, walking, swimming, or biking between July 4 - Dec. 11.Â
The agenda item that drew the most public attention, with 16 written comments attached to the agenda and one phone-in during the meeting, was the Ocean Boulevard Street Improvement Project. The public comments recorded were 11-5 against improvements; however, many of the letters in both opposition and support were nuanced in support of different variations of improvement. ....
