In April 2021, a viral tweet resurfaced a distasteful episode in the recent history of policing in Mobile, Alabama: The “homeless quilt.”
On April 29, Alec Karakatsanis, the executive director of Civil Rights Corps, a nonprofit that fights what it describes as “systemic injustice in the United States’ legal system,” published a widely shared post on Twitter.
The tweet featured what appeared to be a photograph of two police officers smiling as they held up a patchwork of cardboard signs of the kind sometimes displayed by homeless people, with messages such as “Homeless, need help,” “Will work,” and “Trying to make it, anything helps.” ....

A low-key Mobile City Council action this week shows the price tag the city puts on COVID-related losses at the city-owned Mobile Saenger Theatre: Just under $1 million.
That in turn shows what an asset the historic theater can be when it’s able to live up to its potential. Context provided by the operator shows that the venue had gross ticket sales of more than $2 million in the fiscal year before COVID hit. ....

About six years ago, the Rev. Tony Pope began preaching the gospel from his front yard in Mobile. He then started taking his sermons to some of the city’s more crime-ridden streets. More recently, he can be spotted outside one the city’s Walmart stores, “spreading peace” through scripture.
He’s also taken his microphone and sound system to downtown Mobile, where lengthy sermons are conducted from Bienville Square or Cathedral Square parks. ....
