CSX and Norfolk Southern (NS) oppose Amtrak’s plan, and the issue is now before the Surface Transportation Board (STB). The issues are purportedly operational, having to do with rail capacity at the Port of Mobile, although there are also procedural issues to the controversy. There is a political dimension, too, with essentially the entire political establishment in Mississippi supporting Amtrak’s position and all of Alabama’s opposing it.

Gorton Returns to Conrail as President, COO

Brian E. Gorton Brian E. Gorton, who began his career in 1987 as a Conrail conductor, has returned to his “home railroad” as President and Chief Operating Officer. He succeeds Timothy C. Tierney, who is retiring after nearly 43 years in the railroad industry. Gorton advanced to Assistant Terminal Superintendent before departing “Big Conrail” in 1998, prior to CSX and Norfolk Southern splitting it up 58%/42%. (Conrail then transitioned to Conrail Shared Assets LLC, a neutral terminal and switching service provider for co-owners CSX and NS operating in Detroit, Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey.
