The 2020-21 season provided a journey the Lions could never have imagined. “It’s been a long season, it’s been a grueling season,” said Head Coach, Bart Smith. “We’re really not taking anything for granted and playing with an attitude like this could be it because there for a while, it looked like we were going to be done.” ....
Mason City junior Jace Rhodes added another accomplishment to his wrestling resume on Friday night, as Rhodes beat Ankeny Centennial junior Drew Dunn to win the132 pound CIML Iowa conference ....
The Clear Lake girls basketball team continued its recent hot streak with a 48-39 win over Roland-Story on Thursday night. Three Lions players finished with double-digit scoring totals, led by senior Kaitlyn VanderPloeg with 14 points. Juniors Emily Theiss and Jaden Ainley had respective totals of 12 and 11 points. With the win, No. 3 Clear Lake improved to 14-1 on the season, and has won six consecutive games. The Lions will play Friday at Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Girls Basketball Algona 53, Hampton-Dumont-CAL 26: The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls lost to Algona on Thursday night, 53-26, to fall to 5-11 on the season and 3-6 in conference play. The Bulldogs will host Clear Lake on Friday night. ....
The Mason City girls basketball came extremely close again to pulling off a stunning victory over a ranked opponent on Tuesday night. After going scoreless in the first quarter against Waverly-Shell Rock, the Mohawks outscored the Go-Hawks, 45-37, over the final three frames. Mason City scored 20 points in the fourth but couldn t quite close the gap, as the Mohawks fell to 0-8 with a 49-45 loss. Three players did all of the scoring for Mason City, as junior Jada Williams led the way with 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting, with four 3-pointers. Freshman Reggi Spotts had 16 points, and also contributed four 3-pointers, while fellow freshman Grace Berding had the rest of Mason City s 10 points. ....
The Mason City boys basketball team scored an important win on Tuesday night, with a 65-59 victory over Fort Dodge. The Mohawks were led on offense by junior Corey Miner, who put up 33 points on 11-of-19 shooting, with nine free throws. Mason City took a 35-29 halftime lead, which held up as the two teams scored an identical 30 points in the second half. Along with Miner s scoring explosion, junior Brandon Shipman came through with 12 rebounds. Shipman scored 10 points, while junior Isaiah Washington contributed 11. Four Dodgers scored in double figures. Senior Averey Martin put up 13, while sophomore Javion Jondle put up 12. Junior Carson Peterson and Bradley Vodraska scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. ....
