Residents offer annual criticisms of city potholes MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Along with the return of the robins and hummingbirds to Kewanee, spring is the season for potholes to appear in local streets. This spring is no exception, and so many holes have appeared in local roads that at least one City Council member has heard from a number of residents about the problem. There have been so many calls that “I’ve considered turning my phone off,” Councilman Steve Faber said during last week’s council meeting. Faber has asked what city crews are doing about the pothole situation, and Public Works Director Kevin Newton said they’ve been busy throughout the city. ....
Moore, Bradley lawyer up after former employees file lawsuit MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Two former city employees filed lawsuits in federal court last month against the city of Kewanee, and Mayor Gary Moore and City Manager Gary Bradley individually, seeking “at least” $200,000 in damages. Rodney Johnson and Deborah Johnson maintain in their legal actions that their terminations of employment violated the city’s administrative code. In addition to the damages, they are seeking benefits they say they are owed, reinstatement of their status as city retirees, and access to the city’s health insurance under the COBRA law. Deborah Johnson, who started with the city in 1992, had been the city’s accounts and finances director, and Rodney Johnson, a city employee since 1995, was the public works operations manager. ....
Arby s bringing jobs, community partnerships to Kewanee Star Courier Along with The Meats and curly fries, the new Kewanee Arby s will be bringing with it several dozen jobs and promises to be deeply involved with the community through local sponsorships. The restaurant, whose construction on the northeast corner of Midland Plaza Shopping Center started in March, could open as soon as late July. Kevin Ramirez, part of the decades-old, four-person ownership group that has 15 other Arby s restaurants in 12 cities in Illinois and the Quad Cities, said they all are from small towns in the region and their track record involves investing in the communities in which they operate. ....
Yaklich takes parting shot at manager MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Councilman Mike Yaklich said Monday that there have been “bad practices” in the way city staff has handled the city’s finances, and singled out City Manager Gary Bradley for bearing responsibility. During the “council comments” section of Monday’s City Council meeting, Yaklich said there are problems with “accountability, responsibility and transparency” on finances. Reading from a prepared statement, Yaklich said, “In January the mayor and council were faced with a crossroad, continue to ignore bad practices or push for the best interests of the citizens of Kewanee. ....
