City officials investigate safety of downtown building Mike Berry The Star Courier If you’re walking in downtown Kewanee, you’ll have to stay on the south side of the street in the 200 block of West Second Street. Due to a possible problem with the foundation under the sidewalk on the north side of the street, by the Odd Fellows Building, it has been closed by the city. Keith Edwards, the city’s community development director, said no danger has been observed around the sidewalk but that city officials decided to “err on the side of caution” and closed it. ....
Moore, Bradley lawyer up after former employees file lawsuit MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Two former city employees filed lawsuits in federal court last month against the city of Kewanee, and Mayor Gary Moore and City Manager Gary Bradley individually, seeking “at least” $200,000 in damages. Rodney Johnson and Deborah Johnson maintain in their legal actions that their terminations of employment violated the city’s administrative code. In addition to the damages, they are seeking benefits they say they are owed, reinstatement of their status as city retirees, and access to the city’s health insurance under the COBRA law. Deborah Johnson, who started with the city in 1992, had been the city’s accounts and finances director, and Rodney Johnson, a city employee since 1995, was the public works operations manager. ....
Solar project sees daylight The Star Courier Development is proceeding on schedule for a solar project in a field on the west edge of Kewanee. The project on the Lininger Industrial Park, on the north side of the Page Street blacktop just across the railroad tracks, got the go-ahead from the city government when the City Council approved a special use permit for the site last month. Planning is still in the talking phase at this point, according to Jamie Boyd. Boyd is business development manager for Sunpin Solar, the California-based company that’s developing the 24.75-megawatt solar project. She said Sunpin has finalized an interconnection agreement with Ameren Illinois allowing the power generated by the solar arrays to be fed into the Ameren substation on West South Street, just south of the industrial park. ....
