GROSSE POINTES After being named Grosse Pointe Public School System superintendent May 12, Jon Dean felt “excited” and “honored.”
“I’m two-thirds excited and one-third like, ‘Wow.’ I’ve lived here since 1997 and raised my family here,” the Grosse Pointe Woods resident said. “The idea of being superintendent has been a dream of mine for a long time. I’m just honored to get the opportunity. I love the people here.”
Although the 4-3 school board vote was not unanimous to select Dean, “We’re prepared to move forward,” the appointed superintendent said. “We are all doing this for the same reason. We care about the kids. We care about this community.”

GROSSE POINTE FARMS With Grosse Pointe Public School System staff and parents concerned with how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected students, Superintendent Gary Niehaus asked district communications coordinator Mary Anne Brush for an update on their overall mental health.
At the May 10 Board of Education meeting held at Brownell Middle School, Brush presented a mental health update during her Good News Report. The district’s mental health team consists of social workers, counselors and psychologists.
The district is offering full-time in-person instruction and 100% online schooling in its GP Virtual program, depending on a family’s wishes. Brush’s report reflected on students in both programs. To collect data, Brush communicated with the mental health staff.
