Good News Report contains student mental health update Shutterstock image Advertisement GROSSE POINTE FARMS With Grosse Pointe Public School System staff and parents concerned with how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected students, Superintendent Gary Niehaus asked district communications coordinator Mary Anne Brush for an update on their overall mental health. At the May 10 Board of Education meeting held at Brownell Middle School, Brush presented a mental health update during her Good News Report. The district’s mental health team consists of social workers, counselors and psychologists. The district is offering full-time in-person instruction and 100% online schooling in its GP Virtual program, depending on a family’s wishes. Brush’s report reflected on students in both programs. To collect data, Brush communicated with the mental health staff.

Jon Dean is the new GPPSS superintendent Dean Advertisement FARMS  Jon Dean, deputy superintendent for the Grosse Pointe Public School System, was appointed superintendent at a special board meeting held May 12 at Brownell Middle School in Grosse Pointe Farms. The school board voted 4-3 to name Dean superintendent. Board President Joseph Herd, Vice President Margaret Weertz, Secretary Christopher Lee and Treasurer Colleen Worden voted in favor of appointing Dean.  Trustees Lisa Papas, David Brumbaugh and Ahmed Ismail voted against the measure. Papas and Brumbaugh were in favor of selecting the second finalist, Stephen Bigelow, current Bay City Public Schools superintendent, but the vote on that motion failed 5-2.

File photo by Sean Work Related Advertisement GROSSE POINTES The Grosse Pointe Public School System Board of Education is on its way to naming a new superintendent.      The school board plans to appoint the district’s new top administrator May 12 after conducting final interviews May 11-12.      On April 28, the school board had narrowed the field of candidates down to two: Jon Dean, deputy superintendent for GPPSS, and Stephen Bigelow, Bay City Public Schools superintendent. School officials provided background information on both candidates on the district’s website at www.gpschools.org.

Trombly pre-K tuition program to return next year Shutterstock image GROSSE POINTES The Trombly pre-K tuition program will return for the 2021-22 school year. At the March 22 Grosse Pointe Public School System Board of Education meeting held at Brownell Middle School, the school board voted 5-1 for the program. Trombly is located in Grosse Pointe Park. The school closed as an elementary school at the end of the 2019-20 school year. The Trombly Early Childhood Center opened in September 2020 and was intended to be a one-year pilot program. President Joseph Herd, Treasurer Colleen Worden, Secretary Christopher Lee and trustees David Brumbaugh and Lisa Papas voted in favor of the measure. Board Vice President Margaret Weertz voted against the measure. Ahmed Ismail was absent.
