Voters have returned Labour councillors there in every local election from 1973 until 2014 when the Greens won their first seat. As of 7 May, it is represented by three Green councillors, with Labour being knocked into second place. Pat Cleary, the leader of Wirral s green group and the man who first managed to dent Labour s dominance in Birkenhead, would argue their success is down to effective campaigning on the ground on local issues - but wins for the party across the city region could point to something deeper. ....
Sarah Townsend The public has re-elected Labour’s Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram as Mayor of Greater Manchester and Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, respectively, and now they can serve a further three years in post. The winning mayoral candidates were announced today after voters flocked to the polls on Thursday. This year’s elections saw landslide victories for the two mayors, with Burnham scooping up 473,024 of the votes – 67% of the total 702,784 cast – and Rotheram winnig 198,726 votes. In Greater Manchester, Burnham was up against eight other candidates: Laura Evans (Conservatives); Simon Lepori (Liberal Democrats); Melanie Horrocks (Green Party); Marcus Farmer (Independent); Stephen Morris (English Democrats); Nick Buckley (Reform UK); Alec Marvel (Independent), and David Sutcliffe (Independent). ....

Steve Rotheram has won a second term as the Liverpool City Region’s Metro Mayor. Rotheram was re-elected on Saturday with a 132,000 majority from votes cast across in Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, Halton and Wirral areas. The 59-year-old was first elected the combined authority’s new leader in 2017, having previously served as Liverpool’s Lord Mayor and MP for Walton. His closest opponent in the local elections ere Tory candidate Jade Marsden, who received 66,702 votes and the Greens’ Gary Cargill with 40,211 votes. From the city of Liverpool area alone, Mayor Rotheram claimed just shy of 67,000 votes out of a total 100,167 cast to give Labour a 66 per cent share. ....
