The public has re-elected Labour’s Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram as Mayor of Greater Manchester and Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, respectively, and now they can serve a further three years in post.
The winning mayoral candidates were announced today after voters flocked to the polls on Thursday. This year’s elections saw landslide victories for the two mayors, with Burnham scooping up 473,024 of the votes – 67% of the total 702,784 cast – and Rotheram winnig 198,726 votes.
In Greater Manchester, Burnham was up against eight other candidates: Laura Evans (Conservatives); Simon Lepori (Liberal Democrats); Melanie Horrocks (Green Party); Marcus Farmer (Independent); Stephen Morris (English Democrats); Nick Buckley (Reform UK); Alec Marvel (Independent), and David Sutcliffe (Independent). ....

Labour s Andy Burnham has been re-elected as the mayor of Greater Manchester in a landslide victory.
The 51-year-old was backed by 67.3% of voters to continue as the region s mayor for another term.
Mr Burnham s popularity has seen him become the bookmakers favourite to become the next Labour leader, even though he is not in the Commons.
Labour candidate Paul Dennett was also re-elected in the Salford city mayoral election, with 59% of the votes.
Mr Burnham became tearful as he thanked his family during an emotional victory speech.
He thanked those who voted for him and promised to continue to be a voice for all people and communities and to adopt a place first not party approach. ....

The count in the Greater Manchester mayoral and Salford city mayor elections has taken place as Andy Burnham was re-elected in Greater Manchester and Paul Dennett in Salford.
The Greater Manchester election, which took place on Thursday, had originally been scheduled to take place last May - but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Counting of the ballot papers got underway on Saturday morning with the result announced this afternoon. ....
