Legislature unites in support of massive cash infusion to step up firefighting, improve forests and secure communities near the fire lines
After a devastating wildfire season that saw a baby boy die and 1,200 square miles of the state burn, Washington lawmakers are poised to fight fire with money. A lot of money.
Legislation that’s received unanimous support would see Washington spend an additional $125 million over the next two years to extinguish, prevent and live with fires. Both legislative houses have passed House Bill 1168 and Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign the bill, which would see the state spend $328 million on the efforts by 2027. ....

A cornerstone of Washington Democrats climate agenda is now officially dead in the state legislature, leaving the party s green energy dreams in doubt.
Once considered the most ambitious climate legislation this session, House Bill 1099 would have written carbon (CO2) emission reduction into the state s land use codes included in its Growth Management Act by 2034. Counties and cities would have been obligated to promote greenways, study CO2 emissions impact on underrepresented communities, and reduce competition between residential housing and parking developments. The bill applied to the state s denser urban counties, namely those around the Puget Sound. ....

Lowering the amount of carbon that comes out of your tailpipe has become a quest for some Washington lawmakers. Now, new standards that would promote biofuels over gasoline are closer to becoming law than ever before.
If signed into law, the low carbon fuel standard would make fuel coming out of tailpipes cleaner and cleaner through 2035.
Sponsors say the bill would incentivize clean fuel technology, though it doesn’t mandate any specific type of renewable fuel. Options could include biodiesel, renewable natural gas or electricity produced in Washington.  ....

Washington state is no stranger to calls for police reforms.
It’s what was behind the years-long effort that culminated in 2019 with voters overwhelmingly approving I-940, Washington’s new police accountability law that, among other things, required more training for officers and fully independent investigations in use of force cases.
When it was passed, it was largely hailed a victory for families of those killed by police. But when the law took effect, it was clear something was missing: Someone to ensure police agencies were actually following the new rules. As it turns out some were not, such as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department which, despite having had a deputy at the scene of the Tacoma Police Department’s in custody killing of Manny Ellis last year, still took on the “independent investigation” – which is not allowed under I ....
