WOODLAND PARK • Teller County Habitat for Humanity has a leading role in a documentary filmed April 13 at the construction site for Trailhead Homes.
The film crew represented Build with Strength, which was established to promote affordable and sustainable housing in America. “We happened to be the first ones to be filmed because we were pretty far ahead on the project,” said Brandon Laney, director of Habitat’s resource development. “And they really liked that, instead of one home we’re building 18 homes.”
The documentary is the result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity International and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
Oliva’s Owner Invests in Cigarpage.com
The Vandermarliere family, the owner of J. Cortès and Oliva, has made an investment in Brandshopper, the Pennsylvania-based company that owns cigarpage.com.
Brandshopper was founded by Keith Meier, one of the founders of Cigars International, and includes cigarpage.com, an online cigar storefront; wingsupply.com, an online hunting storefront; and fieldsupply.com, an online outdoors storefront.
Meier co-founded Cigars International in 1996. It was sold to Swedish Match in 2007 and is now owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
“The new investment will help accelerate growth and provide the extra push to acquire greater market share in this environment,” said Meier in a press release. “It was important to work with the right partner – and Fred was the one. It was clear early in our discussions that we had a shared vision.”
Candidate filing closed Tuesday for a number of governmental positions that are up for election April 6, setting up several competitive races across South County. One of the trends this year is that many incumbents did not file to run again, so there are a number of new faces across local city and school boards.
The Mehlville fire board and the Green Park mayoral seat will see competitive races this year. Incumbent fire board Treasurer Bonnie Stegman is being challenged by a former firefighter.
Aldermanic seats in Crestwood, Green Park and Sunset Hills are also up for election, along with three seats on the Grantwood Village Board of Trustees. Green Park and Crestwood will have a number of new faces on the Board of Aldermen, but no competitive races, while Sunset Hills will have competitive races in all four wards. And for the first time in recent memory, Grantwood Village will have competitive races.
