Winners of Emirates Airline Festival of Literature's competitions for schools honoured in Dubai

Dubai: The winners of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature’s competitions for schools were recently honoured at several awards ceremonies at the Mohammad Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).
The competitions the Oxford University Press (OUP) Story Writing Competition, The Chevron Readers’ Cup and the Montegrappa Letter Writing Competition allowed young people to show off their skills in story writing and letter composition.
Ahlam Bolooki, festival director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, said: “Schoolchildren have faced so many uncertainties this year, and I know the return of these competitions has been a welcome boost to morale. The competitions have become an annual highlight in the school calendar.” ....

Dubai teacher killed in road traffic accident

A popular Dubai teacher was killed last week in a road traffic accident in the emirate.
Harriet Burford, from England, was the head of Year 3 at Gems Metropole School in Dubai.
A statement was issued after her death by private school operator Gems.
“Gems Education was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the life of a highly regarded and much loved member of our teaching staff,” the statement said.

Headteachers predict thousands more pupils back in schools from January

One Dubai school expects at least 1,000 pupils back on January 3 – up from 150 last term.
Many others across the UAE say more parents and pupils want in-person classes.
Sheela Menon, principal at Ambassador School, an Indian curriculum school in Dubai, said that in the last term, only 12 pupils out of 890
attended classes in person.
For the start of the new term on January 3, more than 250 of Ambassador’s pupils will be back for face-to-face lessons.
“We feel more confidence, optimism and willingness in parents to send children to school,”

Pupils in some British schools in the UAE will sit two mock exams this year, to prepare them in case board examinations are cancelled in 2021.
Heads of schools said they were working to gather sufficient evidence of pupils’ performance in case final exams were cancelled this academic year.
Every year, pupils in exam classes sit for one set of mock tests under exam conditions.
There is anxiety so it s better to gather evidence of a pupil s attainment over time and it s good practice
