VENEZULA – Two family members of the “Citgo 6″ found out late Friday that their loved ones are now on house arrest.
“I can’t overstate what a relief this is because of how difficult this has been for them physically and emotionally after how much they’ve suffered while being imprisoned all these years,” daughter of one of the Citgo 6, Gabriela Zambrano-Hill, aid.
They’ve been detained in Venezuela since 2017 after being accused of money laundering and embezzlement. The country’s foreign minister calling the decision to move the group of American refinery executives from prison to house arrest a goodwill gesture to honor the new White House’s agenda. ....

Secretary of State Antony Blinken talked on Tuesday with the loved ones of Americans held hostage or unlawfully detained abroad a gesture of support from the new administration that garnered high praise from the families who spoke with CNN.
It sent a promising signal, the families said, that the Biden administration will make the release of their loved ones a priority, and they expressed hope that the top US diplomat s investment would translate into bringing their family members home.
It just made my heart sing. I felt like a whole weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I felt heard. I felt cared for. And it was just, it was awesome to feel that way, said Paula Reed, whose son Trevor Reed is imprisoned in Russia. I was crying when we got off (the call); it was just so emotional. ....

As President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take over from the outgoing Trump administration, the goal for the families of Americans unlawfully detained and held hostage abroad remains the same: to see their loved ones returned home.
While some are holding out hope that progress could be made in the final three weeks of Donald Trump s presidency, the families are also now looking to the incoming administration to keep up the efforts to secure their relatives freedom. US sanctions Venezuelan judge, prosecutor over CITGO 6
The Trump administration on Wednesday unveiled sanctions on a Venezuelan judge and prosecutor for their roles in the prosecution and sentencing of six US oil executives, collectively known as the “CITGO 6.”
Judge Lorena Carolina Cornielles Ruiz presided over the trial and “ultimately sentenced each of the six US persons on charges of corruption with prison sentences between eight and thirteen years,” and prosecutor Ramon Antonio Torres Espinoza “was the primary prosecutor representing” the regime of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro during the Citgo 6 trial, according to a press release from the US Treasury Department. ....
