Last week, members of the All Progressive Congress in the Senate and House of Representatives, contrary to the wish of millions of Nigerians, voted against electronic transmission of results in the Electoral act amendment Bill, Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu report
Despite protests, outcries and clamours over the years by millions of Nigerians and stakeholders for a transparent electoral process, members of the Ninth National Assembly, last Thursday, shattered hopes by whittling down the provision on electronic transmission of results.
The lawmakers had penultimate week faced backlash over reported plan to remove electronic transmission of results from the Electoral Act amendment Bill. This caused outrage with several Civil Society Organisations and other stakeholders protesting against the alleged removal of Section 52 (2) of the Bill, which makes no provision for INEC to transmit results of any election electronically. Bill imprisons Nigerians for paying ransom to kidnappers


Kidnapping for ransom in the country has especially spiked over the past couple of years.
Nigerian geopolitical intelligence firm, SBM Intelligence, in a recent report estimated that about $18.3 million was paid as ransom between 2011 and 2020.
Leading debate on the bill on Wednesday,
Senator Francis Onyewuchi (Imo East - PDP), said it seeks to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 with a new section which criminalises payment of ransom to kidnappers and terrorists with 15 years imprisonment.
The lawmaker lamented that hostage-taking has become a lucrative business in Nigeria and is now the most pervasive violent crime across all geopolitical zones.
He said instead of fueling the kidnapping industry with ransom payments, Nigerians should provide necessary information to authorities for the rescue of hostages. ....
