He said between four and five full-time trainers operated at the raceway with other part-timers around the district also used the facility.
“We’re lucky we’ve got an excellent caretaker. Trainers say he’s one of the best in the South Island, and he proved it today. One horse broke 1 minute 10 seconds in a sprint. That’s unheard of at this time of the year.” ....

Plaque commemorating long history of horse racing at Orari unveiled

The plaque commemorates 162 yeas since the first horse race at Orari.
Payne also emphasised the importance of the Orari and Waimate runs to horse racing in the area, with horses first brought to the area for agriculture.
Payne pointed out that the racing clubs in the area predated the formation of the South Canterbury Rugby Union by 19 years.
Payne has a personal connection to racing in the area, as his father was a trustee of the horse racing club for 25 years, and his grandfather ran horses in the area before him, winning the 1947 Timaru Cup, an achievement that is itself noted on a plaque at the Phar Lap Racecourse. ....

As temperatures start to rise in Minnesota, so does the excitement for the 2021 racing season at Canterbury Park. Timaru horseman honoured at big South Canterbury race meeting

Live Drama, ridden by Tina Comignaghi, crosses the finish line, to win Race 3 of the South Canterbury Racing Club s annual Christmas holiday meeting on Monday.
The racing community has paid tribute to a Timaru horseman who died earlier this month, after a 28-year training career, during South Canterbury’s biggest race day of the year.
A remembrance race honouring 54-year-old Michael Daly and other “racing icons” who died this year was introduced at the South Canterbury Racing Club’s annual Christmas holiday meeting on Monday, club president Noel Walker said.
