Stark students race in Seat Belt Challenge, learn about buckling up


Juanita Collins still reaches to brace her daughter when an oncoming car doesn’t fully stop at an intersection.
The Alliance resident also slows way down when she drives through the intersection of state Route 619 and McCallum Avenue NE in Lexington Township. That’s where Collins was driving with her then 13-year-old daughter, Alyssa Barron, on Feb. 9 when another car failed to stop at a flashing red light and struck their vehicle.
The impact of the crash deployed the airbags and sent Collins’ car into a utility pole, which broke in half due to the impact.
Collins said she is thankful that she, Barron and the 19-year-old driver in the other car all had been wearing their seat belts. They each walked away from the crash with only cuts and bruises. ....

Stark Health Dept. holds first COVID-19 vaccine clinic for seniors


PLAIN TWP.  At least an hour before the first shot was even ready, folks began arriving at the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities headquarters eager to get the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Stark County Health Department scheduled the 420 doses each going to someone 80 years old or older for fixed times throughout the day. That didn t stop people from arriving early to secure a place in line.
Mary Powell, 87, of Jackson Township, was the first to go, rolling up the sleeves of her purple blouse and baring her shoulder for nurse Shannon Gahagan.
Powell expected the shot to hurt. She d watched others get the vaccine on TV and noticed how large the needle looked. But she didn t feel anything at all. ....

Canton firefighters receive COVID vaccine

CANTON  City firefighters are receiving the coronavirus vaccine.
The Canton Fire Department on Tuesday released photos and a video of Canton Public Health administering the vaccine at Station 4.
Our medics expose themselves to a lot of COVID patients and we re looking forward to this vaccine being a real answer to curing this deadly disease, Fire Chief Thomas Garra said in the video as he received the vaccine. ....
