Mark Kane Goldstein: Choice should be between strong mayor, no mayor

Some years ago, a ballot amendment backed by a few influential groups created a separate election for a mayor of Gainesville. Until then, for most of the last 100 years, the Gainesville City Commission appointed its own mayor each year, conferring only the power to run the meetings, set the agenda and cut ribbons.
After the vote for a separate election of mayor passed, three former mayor-commissoners, including myself, were tasked with the job of defining the role and the limits of the mayor. The clear consensus among the three of us was that that the only functions of the mayor were to set the agenda and conduct meetings.  ....

Reflections on the 2019 Maricopa County Jewish Community Survey

In January 2018, anticipating my retirement from Jewish Family & Children’s Service, I called Mark Searle, Arizona State University’s provost. I hoped ASU would be interested in collaborating with the Jewish community to conduct the research for a Jewish population study. Searle and I had discussed such a venture a few years earlier.
A series of questions plagued me throughout my tenure at JFCS as vice president of philanthropic services and as a Congregation Or Tzion board member.
How many Jews live in Maricopa County? How many are members of synagogues? What are the reasons more Jews do not join synagogues? What percentage of our Jewish community contribute to Jewish organizations and secular nonprofits? How might synagogue and Jewish organization leaders expand the reach of our institutions? ....

New Pew study of American Jews: Deep questions, surprising answers – J.

Who are the Jews of America? And what do they think?
Answering those questions is a near impossible task, but after seven years, the Pew Research Center again is wading into the breach with the release of its long-awaited report “Jewish Americans in 2020.”
Based on a survey of 4,718 Jews from around the country, the report aims to give an overall portrait of U.S. Jewry. Among the findings are a widening gap between Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews, a growing number of non-white Jews, and a solid number of culturally engaged, nonreligious Jews.
Ari Y. Kelman
But Stanford University professor Ari Y. Kelman, who was on the panel of expert advisers convened by Pew for the report, told J. that people shouldn’t leap to conclusions about what the data is telling them. ....

University of Hartford Wins 2021 Spencer-Rims Risk Management Challenge
April 30, 2021
During the RIMS LIVE 2021 Virtual Conference finale, RIMS CEO Mary Roth and RIMS President Ellen Dunkin announced the University of Hartford student team as the winner of the 2021 Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge.
Competing against 18 other universities from around the world, the students from the University of Hartford successfully delivered their risk management strategies to leaders in the profession during the virtual event.
The competing teams were challenged to develop solutions to address a civic risk management case-study developed by RIMS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council.
“Social issues continue to climb organizations’ and municipalities’ list of top strategic risks,” Roth said in a RIMS press release. “With professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm, this year’s university teams shared a range of ....
