Visiting a Newburyport school on Friday, Governor Charlie Baker said the pool testing program that has launched in hundreds of Massachusetts schools in recent weeks will be a key tool in bringing students back for in-person learning and building âwhatever the next normalâs going to be.â
âTo get to the point where this thing is really starting to rock and roll is a real pleasure I think for all of us who were looking to find a relatively uncomplicated way for schools to implement a weekly surveillance program,â Baker said, speaking after seeing the schoolâs pool testing program in action.

NEWBURYPORT â Newburyport Public Schools will remain in a remote learning model for the two weeks following the holiday break, and then return to a hybrid learning model on Jan. 19.
The School Committee unanimously voted in support of this decision Monday night, which was officially made by the superintendent.
The call to move to remote learning temporarily came after receiving recommendations from members of the district medical advisory including Dr. Jessica Lasky-Su, an associate professor and epidemiologist at Brigham and Women s Hospital and Harvard Medical School; Michael Allard, chief operating officer at the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program; and Cathy Riccio, district nurse leader and supervisor of health services.Â
