Happy Foods proposed migrant housing denied by St. Lucie County Commission

I have been concerned about this since it was originally presented, said County Commissioner Linda Bartz. I worry about taking that many people out there where they don t have a lot of access to anything, and that is why I am voting against it.
Happy Food LLC, a family-owned business and subsidiary of Vero Beach-based IMG Citrus Inc., proposed four 2,930-square-foot dormitory-style buildings, that would have each housed 24 men in the United States on temporary agricultural work visas, on 8 acres just 3 miles east of the Okeechobee County line.
If it were approved, Happy Foods would’ve been the eighth and largest migrant labor camp here. ....

St. Lucie County could alter safety plans for Indian River Drive

The county s original plan has left residents with mixed feelings.
Some argue that the improvements could help save lives, while others complained about noise from the audible speed strips. One resident compared the potential noise to the sound of a machine gun.
Dropping the speed limit to 25 mph, making it a toll road and calling for more law enforcement presence along the drive all were suggestions residents urged the county to consider.
A few people, desperate for more law enforcement, said they would pay $45 an hour for off-duty deputies to patrol Indian River Drive.
County Commissioner Cathy Townsend, who opposes the audible strips and other improvements, said she now wants to spend some of the county s original $750,000 allocation on SkyCop, a Memphis company that mounts cameras to utility poles to monitor traffic and collect data for law enforcement. ....

St. Lucie County abolishes mandatory face mask requirement

ST. LUCIE COUNTY The county chambers Tuesday were packed. Faces with and without masks were seen throughout the crowd. The reason for the high turnout? The end of the mask mandate.
In a 4-1 vote, the County Commission abolished the face mask requirement a mandate that has been in place since July to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Now, the county will encourage people to wear face masks, rather than require it a similar policy Martin county adopted when it repealed its mask mandate about six months ago.
County-owned buildings and private businesses will be exempt from the mask mandate repeal, according to County spokesperson Erick Gill. ....

THAN AN HOUR’S WORTH OF PUBLIC COMMENT HERE TONIGHT THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF WHICH WAS PEOPLE ASKING THE COMMISSIONERS TO REPEAL THE MANDATE AND IN THE END THEY GOT THEIR WISH.
