The government pledged on Tuesday to reduce carbon emissions 78 per cent by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, and to include aviation and shipping pollution in its calculations for the first time. The prime minister was asked at a coronavirus press briefing whether the move means Heathrow’s third runway is now less likely to go ahead, or whether regional airports would have to be cut to compensate. Johnson, a vocal opponent of Heathrow’s expansion, and who missed the parliamentary vote to approve the scheme in June 2018, said this was not the case: “My own views about that particular matter are well known, but that doesn’t mean that I’m opposed to aviation and I believe this country has a great future in pioneering low-carbon aviation. ....
