After a one-year pause, Yards, Barns and Brews returned strongly

By Jef Rietsma Journal Correspondent After a one-year pause, “Yards, Barns and Brews” returned strongly over the weekend, proving that there was, indeed, something for everyone. The two-day event at the St. Joseph County fairgrounds got off to a tepid start Friday, but was in full force early Saturday. The fair-sponsored rummage sale at Fred Henningsen Show Arena and additional barns were a major draw. “Yards, Barns and Brews,” presented by St. Joseph County United Way, was canceled in 2020, after a notable debut in 2019. With the exception of the garage sale, all proceeds benefit the agency. At the garage sale, Lisa Hawkins of Three Rivers had an abundance of items she wanted to sell, due to a recent downsizing.

When Yards, Barns and Brews was introduced in 2019, it was embraced

By Jef Rietsma When “Yards, Barns and Brews” was introduced in 2019, it was embraced. The COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on a follow-up in 2020, but officials with St. Joseph County United Way have regrouped for 2021’s event, set for 2-8 p.m. May 7 and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. May 8 at the St. Joseph County fairgrounds. Kelly Hostetler, executive director at the agency, said there is plenty happening both days. Day one features tree sales from St. Joseph County Conservation Club, arts and crafts, and three commercial barns will be open for commercial vendors. There also will be food vendors, local brews and live music. Barn 45 will host the adult beverages. Drinks from Kelsey Block Brewing Co., Corey Lake Orchards and St. Julian Winery will be offered. The Irrelevant Reverends will perform 5:30-7 p.m., followed by Sweet Jonny Knox at 7 p.m.

2021 Radiothon coming May 27

Sturgis Journal St. Joseph County United Way hopes to top its 2020 WBET Radiothon donations May 27, at the 12th annual event. Last year’s fundraiser for St. Joseph County United Way raised $103,000 through the 18-hour radio event, executive director Kelly Hostetler said Wednesday. Proceeds from the fundraiser marathon benefit the 40 funded agencies the local United Way supports, Hostetler said. Money is placed in the general fund and allocated as needed. This year, Hostetler said, the organization’s goal is to serve the agencies more evenly, including those that focus on children, education and camps. “Last year, our food and emergency services received priority funding,” she said, referring to the pandemic and the extensive need it created.
