LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined a bipartisan coalition of 22 attorneys general urging Congress to provide federal funds for state systems and technology upgrades needed to seal and expunge criminal justice records.  
These funds could help some of the nearly 70 million Americans – one third of U.S. adults – clear or expunge records of arrest or conviction. Research shows that automatic record clearing could regain billions in lost economic activity for eligible people by clearing the way for secondary education, job opportunities, professional licensing, ....

Former state worker charged with embezzling job related money

A former employee of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is facing embezzlement charges.
The Attorney General’s office filed charges against Joseph Pettit. He worked in EGLE’s Oil, Gas, and Minerals Division. One of his jobs was to make sure when an oil or gas well changed hands, the original owner got back the conformance bond money that was required by the state before drilling or operating a well.
Based on a Michigan State Police investigation, the Attorney General’s filed three counts of embezzlement over $100 thousand dollars, charged Pettit with using a computer to commit a crime, and four counts of uttering and publishing which basically alleges he set up a system to defraud someone. ....

The arrest of a Holland restaurant owner for violating state lockdown orders appears to have gone against court guidelines issued for police on the detention of nonviolent suspects during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marlena Hackney is the owner of Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria in Holland. On March 19 she was arrested in Holland by the Michigan State Police during a 5:45 a.m. traffic stop. Police officials said the arrest occurred after the department received a request for assistance from the state attorney general’s office. ....
