Iowa s Reinvestment District Program, which could bring $10 million in tax rebates to Ames, will retroactively fund a portion of the project, but the city will need to use bonds upfront. It is not a usual thing for us to move forward with a matter like this without taking it to the voters for their input, Councilmember Tim Gartin said. The city of Ames held an open forum Thursday to receive input from the community on a downtown meeting space just east of City Hall where a parking lot is currently located. Plans for the space date back to the 1990s but never came to fruition, planning and housing director Kelly Diekmann said. We kind of sat silent for a number of years, Diekmann said. The 2020 City Council s goal-setting process set the project back in motion when they aimed to make Ames a fun, vibrant community that attracts people, Diekmann said. ....
Ames Tribune The people of Ames can share what they want a downtown plaza to look like at an Ames City Council open forum at 7 p.m. Jan. 21. The council discussed in November ideas for the $2.7 million plaza project, including an ice skating rink that could be converted into a splash pad in the summer, food vendors and a stage for smaller events. The council approved contracting architecture firm Confluence in December to design the all-seasons plaza. The plaza will be built between Fifth and Sixth streets across from City Hall, where a public parking lot currently sits. “We are exploring how the space can provide a diverse set of experiences for individuals and groups that may use it,” said Planning and Housing Director Kelly Diekmann, according to a news release. “We would like the public to share their thoughts on features that would make the plaza an attractive and fun destination as part of a visit Downtown.” ....
