Poet Maya Angelou Chosen as One of Two Women to Appear on the U.S. Quarter, Social Media Questions What Happened to Harriet Tubman's $20 Bill


“Phenomenal Woman” and iconic poet Dr.
Maya Angelou will soon become the first Black woman featured on the tails-side of a U.S. quarter. 
The U.S. Mint announced Angelou and Sally Rider, the first American female astronaut to fly in space in 1984, as the first two women chosen for its American Women Quarters Program. The program’s intention is to recognize women who have greatly contributed to the fabric of America.

“I am pleased to see that the first women to be recognized under my bill are outstanding individuals in the fields of science and literature: Dr. Sally Ride and Dr. Maya Angelou,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D) of California, who introduced the legislation to the U.S. Treasury for consideration.  ....

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the return of their Socially Distanced Summer in-person concerts at Olympia Fields Country Club on May 19, June 23, July 14 and August 4, at 6:15 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., plus the streaming of the final concert of the IPO Reimagined season, Fanfare for the Common Man and Uncommon Woman, featuring IPO s world-class woodwind, brass and percussion musicians filmed performing at Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, streaming for 17 days only May 28-June 13 for free via youtube.com/ilphilorch. Inside the Hidden History of Rosenwald Schools


Julius Rosenwald, the son of Jewish immigrants who fled religious persecution in Germany, turned Sears, Roebuck & Co. into America’s largest retailer. Booker T. Washington, who was born into slavery, created the Tuskegee Institute and led the college for more than 30 years.
Their groundbreaking partnership in the early decades of the 20th century led to a transformative initiative: the creation of 4,978 schools for African American children in 15 Southern and border states.
The program reshaped America. Economists at the Federal Reserve said the Rosenwald Schools were the most significant factor in the narrowing of the South’s racial education gap between World War I and II. Further, they were a meaningful force in the rise of the civil rights movement. Educating Blacks helped belie the canard that African Americans were intellectually inferior and many of the leaders and foot soldiers of the movement attended Rosenwald schools. ....
