Washington s latest policies to contain China will prove self-defeating, said Chas Freeman in an article published on the East Asia Forum.
PLAYING A LOSING GAME
Washington would be easy to spot in a game of chess, argued the former US Assistant Secretary of Defense, It s the player with no plan beyond an aggressive opening.
His article stated that Washington erred in its decision to launch a trade dispute against China.
Not only have the tariffs and sanctions failed to reduce US trade deficits, but they have also harmed American workers and consumers.
US farmers have lost most of their US$24 billion Chinese market. US companies have had to accept lower profits, cut wages and jobs, defer wage hikes, and raise prices for American consumers, said the article. ....

Japan should stand stronger with US

Japan should stand stronger with US
By Joseph Bosco
China constantly seeks out ways to complain about perceived slights and provocations as pretexts for its own aggressive behavior. It is both victimization paranoia and a form of information warfare that keeps the West on the defensive. True to form, China objected even to the innocuous reference to Taiwan at April 16’s summit meeting between US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
Neither leader’s prepared remarks even mentioned Taiwan, out of deference to the Japanese side. Biden’s opening statement was modest: “Prime Minister Suga and I affirmed our ironclad support for US-Japanese alliance and for our shared security. We committed to working together to take on the challenges from China, and on issues like the East China Sea, the South China Sea, as well as North Korea to ensure a future of a free and open Indo-Pacific.” ....

Taiwan: The New Geopolitical And Economic Flash Point

The island nation of Taiwan may be in the spotlight today for handling Covid-19 without a lockdown but
it’s about to become one of the most contentious geopolitical flashpoints of the decade. On April 17, 2021, The
South China Morning Post reported that,
“The United States and Japan called for “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait” in a joint statement released after a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga who reaffirmed their commitment to counter China’s “intimidation” in the East and South China seas in wide-ranging talks.
It is the first time since 1969 that the top leaders of the two countries mentioned Taiwan in a joint statement, a move that is set to infuriate Beijing.” ....

Taipei, April 19 (CNA) Owing to Beijing s increasingly aggressive actions, the United State and Japan have shifted their policy on the security of the Taiwan Strait from ambiguity to clarity, academics in Taiwan said Monday.
The U.S.- Japan Joint Leaders Statement explicitly pointed out the importance of the security of the Taiwan Strait, said Su Tzu-yun (蘇紫雲), a senior analyst at the government-funded Institute for National Defense and Security Research, during a forum discussing the recently-concluded U.S.-Japan summit in Washington. ....
