Hanson supports world-first carbon sequestration field trial

Hanson supports world-first carbon sequestration field trial
Crushed basalt donated from Hanson’s Builth Wells quarry in Powys is being used in a field trial to measure the impact it can have on removing carbon dioxide (CO
2) from the atmosphere. The world-first project by The Carbon Community, a charity dedicated to creating forests and accelerating carbon removal, aims to define a new reforestation approach to accelerate and enhance the sequestration of CO
2 in trees and soil and improve biodiversity.
In May, more than 25,000 trees have been planted on 11 hectares just outside the Brecon Beacons in Wales. The project will assess the effects of using live soils from nearby forests to reintroduce microbes and organisms to increase tree survival rates as well as enhanced rock weathering (ERW) on carbon sequestration. ....

How to pick a tree-planting project? Mongabay launches transparency tool to help potential supporters decide

How to pick a tree-planting project? Mongabay launches transparency tool to help potential supporters decide
by Liz Kimbrough on 17 May 2021
Mongabay has put together a database to show whether tree-planting and reforestation projects publicly disclose the criteria that experts say are keys to success.
Our directory is built on a three-month research effort to record publicly available information on more than 350 tree-planting projects in 80 countries.
Rather than make an assessment (and perceived endorsement) of the quality of the projects, Mongabay’s review is based on how much information is publicly disclosed by an organization.
Here, we present some key questions to ask and criteria to consider when evaluating the legitimacy and effectiveness of a tree-planting project. ....

No matter how many solar panels, wind turbines and electric cars are built between now and 2030, the world won’t meet its increasingly ambitious climate targets without a lot of help from forests, fields and oceans.
“Achieving net-zero by 2050 will not be possible without nature,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said on April 22 at the online climate summit hosted by President Joe Biden as she opened a session on nature-based climate solutions. “The impact of greenhouse gas pollution from extreme heat and storms is having a devastating effect on our lands and oceans. At the same time, nature provides us with solutions.”  ....
