Rock Hill's Friendship 9 Story Told In New Documentary By Veteran Charlotte Reporter

WFAE
The Friendship 9 gather in 2015 when their convictions from staging a sit-in at a Rock Hill diner in 1961 were dismissed.
In 1961, a group of Friendship College students in Rock Hill, South Carolina, staged a sit-in at the McCrory s segregated lunch counter. Known as the Friendship 9 , they were immediately arrested and sentenced to 30 days on the chain gang.
Six years ago Thursday, that conviction was vacated. Charges were also dropped that day against four others who participated in the sit in, including Charles Jones of Charlotte, a Johnson C. Smith student at the time.
Can you imagine? After all this time, here we are, people of the globe being respected, Charles Jones said then. We never thought that that would happen. We believed. ....

Jan. 16-23, 2021: The Week In Review From WFAE

@POTUS/Twitter
Joe Biden is sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021.
America Turns A Page. What Comes Next?
This time last week, many Americans were concerned. Concerned about whether violent protests would consume Washington and state capitals. Concerned about what could happen in the waning days of what had been a chaotic four years in the White House. Concerned about how it would all impact the transfer of power.
But when the sun set Wednesday, a new president was in the Oval Office, and there had been no reports of large-scale violence. Things aren t rosy, though. The U.S. has a long road ahead, figuring out how to deal with extremism and the ongoing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Charlotte's Harvey Gantt: It's 'Hard To Believe We Find Ourselves In This Place' After Capitol Violence

/
Harvey Gantt stands on the steps of Sikes Hall on the day he entered Clemson University as its first Black student in 1963.
On this holiday to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Americans are reflecting on King’s legacy and the divisiveness of the country, especially given the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol more than a week ago.
In his famous 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, King wrote that “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” These are indeed challenging times that have many in the country wondering how we move forward as a nation. It’s a question former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt has thought about over the years, including when he was the first African American to attend Clemson University and when he lost in a tight race for the U.S. Senate in 1990 that was racially charged. ....

School In A Bubble? Benedict College President Says It Worked

/
With the fall semester wrapped up, some colleges did better than others keeping COVID-19 cases low on campus. In Columbia, South Carolina, officials at the private, historically Black Benedict College operated under the bubble concept. It’s an approach similar to the NBA and some other professional sports. Students are pretty much not allowed to leave campus, testing is done frequently and visitors are banned.
Benedict College President Roslyn Clark Artis says they had a total of 17 COVID-19 cases over the course of the 12-week semester that ended last month. She calls that a success and explains how it worked. ....
