Malibu and Santa Monica continue to prepare for LACOE hearing

Malibu and Santa Monica officials are set to appear in front of LACOE’s Committee on School District Organization during a hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 17, but both sides are gearing up to discuss the matter among themselves and local residents ahead of the upcoming public hearing.
SMMUSD’s Board of Education is set to meet this Thursday at 4 p.m. via Zoom for a closed session meeting that will allow board members and staff to discuss Malibu unification.
“It would be inappropriate for me to speak to closed session items prior to any discussion,” Superintendent Ben Drati said this week. “but I will say that it is important for the full board to meet with all appropriate counsel to discuss the latest issues regarding unification.” ....

The Castaic Union School District governing board appointed a new president during its annual organizational board meeting last month.
The board voted to appoint Mayreen Burk, representative for Trustee Area E, as CUSD board president for the 2021 year, which was previously held by Fred Malcomb, representative for Trustee Area C.
“I look forward to working as a board to focus on student achievement. I know we all look forward to having all of our students back on campus as soon as it is safe to do so,” Burk said. “We will also be focused on providing the social and emotional support our students and staff will need this year as we continue with distance learning and when we are able bring all students back on campus. This has been an extraordinarily tough year, and we want to make sure everyone gets the support they need.” ....

Warehouses create lower-paying jobs and environmental pollution in Fontana

Mayor Acquanetta Warren responded to an outpour of opposition to ongoing warehouse development in a letter to the editor on Nov. 27, 2020.
Unsurprisingly, she failed to meaningfully respond to residents growing concerns about building warehouses next to our homes and our children s schools, as well as the harmful environmental impacts that are exacerbating in the city of Fontana, surrounding communities, and damaging our children s health.
In her response, Mayor Warren affirmed to the community that she has opted for a status-quo approach to economic investment and advancement opportunities, even though residents want and have demanded better.
Mayor Warren stated that warehousing and logistics operations in our city provide nearly 12,000 jobs, but, as always, she fails to cite sources and the average salary. Per indeed, an average warehouse worker earns $33,028 annually, which is $13.54 an hour and $4,875 in overtime. ....

San Bernardino County has filed an action in the California Supreme Court asking the court to find that the governor’s stay-at-home orders exceed the authority found in the California Emergency Services Act. The county seeks to exercise local control in response to the COVID-19 pandemic rather than be restrained by the state’s regional approach that treats San Bernardino County the same as significantly different counties. San Bernardino County has urged the state to recognize that the county’s size and geographic diversity should allow for fewer restrictions in communities with lower COVID-19 metrics than the county as a whole. ....
