Breathtaking review: Welcome to the world of the hospital doctor

Rating:
What is it like to watch as a patient gulps for his last breath, eyes bulging at you in terror? How does it feel to be breathless yourself, stuck behind a sweaty visor that steams up so badly you fear making a life-threatening blunder?
And why does being hailed as a ‘hero’ by politicians every Thursday evening start to seem like a sick joke? Welcome to the world of the hospital doctor in a time of pandemic.
Rachel Clarke is an NHS consultant in palliative care. In normal times her work involves helping terminally ill patients leave this world as gently as possible. But in the spring of 2020, her hospice is repurposed as a ‘Covid Response Centre’ and she is tasked with caring for critically ill patients who, a mere fortnight earlier, were commuting by train and taking their grandchildren to the park.  ....

'Savage hills and savage people': Scotland through the eyes of Robert Burns

Scotland s most famous poet almost relocated to the Caribbean

If Robert Burns had got his way we might celebrate Burns Night by eating rice and peas and jerk chicken – perhaps with a ginger beer or a Red Stripe – rather than haggis, neaps and a dram. Chances are, if he’d made the break and lived a colonial’s life in the sultry tropics, he’d not have produced such memorable poems and songs. Influenced by the Scottish makar tradition and espousing republicanism and traditional Scottish values, Burns is known as the “national poet of Scotland”. Sometimes dubbed a pre-Romantic, he wrote about farm life, local experiences, traditional culture and religious practices; his poems, rich in vernacular and full of emo ....

The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI) has come out strongly against the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Barbados charity moving to the first official residence of the Prime Minister of Barbados.
General Secretary of CMPI David Denny who said he is supporting Member of Parliament Trevor Prescod’s opposition to his Government’s move to lease the property to the charity at $1,200 monthly for a period of 25 years, is calling on members of the Pan Africanist movement and social activists to also stand in solidarity with Prescod objecting to the move out of respect for Father of Independence Right Excellent Errol Barrow, also a National Hero. ....

Threats of 'hard' action on independence risk negating all we've achieved

THE furore surrounding Alex Salmond and the “hard” versus “soft” independence factions are a major distraction from our long-term goal. Frustration at the lack of progress and the perceived injustice towards Alex underpins all of this.
While hard independence is a nice romantic concept full of die-hard bravado, the reality is far from the case. Have any of the frustrated ever actually stopped to think how that can be achieved, what it would cost in the short term and how – following a doubtful success – we can instantaneously create the administrative functions of a working independent state, gaining international recognition and support at the same time? ....
