More manpower coming to clean up Sargassum

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey says more people will be employed to remove the problematic sargassum seaweed from beaches across the island this year.
He said the additional manpower will be part of his ministry’s approach to the problem over the next four to five months.
“I think it makes sense that the personnel would come from the areas that are affected. So, personnel from St Lucy for River Bay in St Lucy, and for Green Pond, personnel from St Andrew. That is what we are going to be working on but this is going to be a constant conversation now for the next few months,” Humphrey said. ....

Sargassum seaweed causes fish kill in St Andrew

Authorities are investigating a fish kill in the Greenpond at Morgan Lewis Beach, St Andrew.
According to Minister of Maritime Affairs and Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey, who toured the area today with other ministry officials and the top brass of the Coastal Zone Management Unit, preliminary evidence indicates that the fish in the pond are dying from the sargassum seaweed that has been pushed into major coastal wetlands by significant sea swells.
“So, between the salt water and the sargassum seaweed getting into the pond, it made it very difficult for life in the pond to continue as normal, and that’s the reason why we are seeing some of the fish affected in the way that they are being affected. We are hoping to reduce that in the very near future,” Humphrey said. ....

The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI) has come out strongly against the Duke of Edinburgh International Award Barbados charity moving to the first official residence of the Prime Minister of Barbados.
General Secretary of CMPI David Denny who said he is supporting Member of Parliament Trevor Prescod’s opposition to his Government’s move to lease the property to the charity at $1,200 monthly for a period of 25 years, is calling on members of the Pan Africanist movement and social activists to also stand in solidarity with Prescod objecting to the move out of respect for Father of Independence Right Excellent Errol Barrow, also a National Hero. ....
